The Gambia wins Gabon 5-3 in a post-match penalty shootout

The Gambia CHAN Team emerged victorious in a mouth-watering 5-3 post-match penalty shootout win over Gabon.

The Scorpions win came after a couple of barren draws over the two legs of the African Nations Championship qualifiers.

The Gabonese home-based side had the chance to put the ball at the back of the net in front of the home side when Nasta Bambou was brought down in the box for a penalty. However, Samson Mbingui sends goalkeeper Lamin Saidy the wrong way from the resulting penalty but the ball comes off the post to the dismay of the home supporters.

The intriguing encounter was decided in the post-match penalty shootout after both sides failed to score a goal after the 90 minutes of the double-legged encounter. Alagie Sarr’s charges earned the right to play Algeria in the final hurdle of the CHAN qualifiers after a pulsating 5-3 shootout victory.

“After our game in Thies, we went back home to study our weaknesses and strengths and that of the Gabonese as well. But we also trained on penalties because we anticipated that such could decide the game,” Alagie Sarr told the GFF media.
