By Isatou Sarr

Brikama, The Gambia – Police have arrested a former soldier in connection with the suspected murder of 40-year-old Fatou Sambou, whose body was discovered on her groundnut farm behind the Brikama Power Station on 2 December 2025.

Sambou, a resident of Kembujeh Madina, was found with severe injuries to her head and hand. Crime scene investigators responded promptly, transporting her to Brikama District Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her body was later transferred to the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

The Gambia Police Force said a breakthrough in the case came after investigators traced the victim’s stolen mobile phone, with assistance from key institutional partners who helped identify the device.

The investigation led to the arrest of 26-year-old Sulayman Saidykhan, a native of Bakary Sambouya and a former soldier with a prior criminal record. Police confirmed that Saidykhan was in possession of the deceased woman’s phone at the time of his arrest.

He has been formally cautioned, charged, and detained as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the killing.

In a statement, the police commended the public and partner institutions for their cooperation, describing their support as crucial in the swift identification and arrest of the suspect.

“The GPF remains committed to ensuring justice for the victim and her family,” the statement read, urging citizens to remain calm while the investigation continues.

The arrest has eased growing concern in Brikama Misira and surrounding communities, where Sambou’s death had sparked fear and calls for accountability. Authorities said further updates will be provided as more information emerges.
