Electrification Project Brings Hope to Niamina West and Dankunku Districts

The National Water and Electricity Company has launched a major electrification project in the rural districts of Niamina West and Dankunku, bringing an end to years of darkness and neglect. This long-awaited development is already having a positive impact on many villages, including those in Niamina West District.

Historically, rural communities in The Gambia have faced significant challenges, particularly regarding access to basic social amenities like electricity and water. However, under President Barrow’s, there has been significant progress in electrifying even the most remote villages. The current efforts by the National Water and Electricity Company to connect poles and extend electricity to these rural areas are a testament to this commitment.

Reflecting on the past, many in Niamina questioned their district’s inclusion within The Gambia, especially during the early years of former President Jammeh’s regime. The district, perceived as politically oppositional due to its ties with the UDP and GDC party leader from the Central River Region (CRR) and URR, respectively, often felt isolated and neglected.

Now, with the ongoing electrification project, there is renewed hope in both Niamina West and Niamina Dankunku Districts that by 2024, they will finally enjoy the benefits of electricity. The sentiment in the community is overwhelmingly positive, with residents expressing their gratitude for the government’s efforts.

Modou Lamin Bah, a native of Dalaba in Niamina West, shared his joy, saying, “We are very happy that the government is finally providing us with electricity like other districts. At least now, we can see where our taxes are going.”

Mariama Jallow, from Sambang village, echoed his sentiments, noting that “this development is long overdue. It’s a relief to see our district being prioritized, and we are hopeful for a brighter future.”

Mai Sima Jallow, the Alkalo of Kumbaney village, also expressed his happiness about the electrification of his village. “This will help boost the economy of the district and change the living conditions of our people,” he said. “It’s a long overdue development that will reduce rural-urban migration. With electricity, people with skills like welding, sewing, and many others can now work within the district, improving our local economy.”

As the poles are being connected and the lights is expected before the end of 2024 to shine, the people of Niamina West and Dankunku are hopeful that this project will mark the beginning of a new era—one where development reaches even the most remote corners of The Gambia. The future now seems brighter, and the long years of darkness are finally coming to an end.
