A dangerous drifting incident at the Abuko Upper Basic and Senior Secondary School football field has left a young student seriously injured, sparking renewed concerns about reckless driving in school zones.
According to eyewitnesses, a vehicle bearing registration number BJL 7450 Y was seen performing reckless stunts on the school’s football field earlier today when it struck a Grade 6 pupil, inflicting a severe leg injury. The victim, a student of James Junkung Lower Basic School, was immediately rushed to Ndemban Clinic for emergency medical treatment.
The driver of the vehicle, described as a known drifter, was apprehended on the scene by teachers and later handed over to the police for investigation and possible prosecution.
The Abuko school field has long been a known hotspot for illegal drifting activities, with repeated complaints and efforts by school officials and community members to deter these dangerous stunts. Despite this, the area remains a gathering ground for drifters, putting the lives of students and residents at constant risk.
“We have warned about this before. Today it has resulted in a child being seriously injured. This cannot continue,” said a concerned teacher at the scene.
Residents and school authorities are now calling on law enforcement and relevant authorities to take immediate and decisive action to secure the area and prevent further incidents. They are urging the installation of barriers, increased patrols, and stricter enforcement of traffic laws around the school premises.
“The safety of our children must come first. Authorities must act before it’s too late,” another resident emphasised.
As the injured student receives medical attention, the community awaits swift justice and preventive measures to ensure that such a tragic event does not happen again.
