The National Assembly on Monday approved a motion granting the Special Select Committee investigating the sale and disposal of assets linked to former President Yahya Jammeh additional time to complete its work.
The Committee, established following recommendations of the Janneh Commission, is mandated to examine the financial activities of public bodies, enterprises, and offices in connection with former President Jammeh.
The motion, moved under Section 192 of the Constitution of The Republic of The Gambia, 1997, and Standing Orders 53 and 95 of the National Assembly, was seconded and adopted without debate after clarifications regarding the submission timeline.
The extension allows the Committee to verify evidence, consolidate findings, and ensure its conclusions reflect the extensive documentation and testimonies already collected. The Committee has conducted public hearings, received witness testimonies, and reviewed voluminous records, but the complexity of the inquiry necessitates additional time.
Originally mandated to complete its work within 120 days, and later granted a 90-day extension, the Committee must now submit its final report to the Office of the Clerk by 31 January 2026, ahead of the next Ordinary Session of Parliament.
During the extended period, the Committee may request additional documents, seek clarifications, and re-engage witnesses where necessary. The extension, however, is strictly for verification and finalization purposes and does not broaden the scope of the original inquiry.
Several lawmakers sought clarification on the timeline and scope of the extension to ensure effective oversight. The Assembly confirmed that the Committee’s work should conclude within the extended period, with the report tabled during the next Ordinary Session, without convening an extraordinary session.
