Experts from the People’s Republic of China have begun a month of training for extension workers on vegetable crop cultivation, geared towards boosting the agricultural sector.

The training held at Jambanjelly Mix Farming Center under (China-aid Agriculture Technology Cooperation Project brings sixty participants from different agricultural sectors to discuss and share ideas.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Alagie Nyangado, acknowledged the government’s long bilateral standing with the People’s Republic of China.

According to him, horticulture is the backbone of every country. “If our stomachs are not full, there is no development in place. When you look at the Gambia, agriculture employs about 70% of the population. So if 70% of the population is not productive, it affects the entire government or the entire economy,” he said. As a result, he continued, the government has put in lots of investment in horticulture.

This, he says, is part of the technology training that farmers and extension workers will be trained on.

Mr Tong Zhan, Economic and Commercial Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Gambia, explained that the embassy had communicated with the Ministry of Agriculture on how to promote the capacity building for professionals in the agricultural sector.

Mr. Weng Yong, Deputy Director of Longping High-tech International Training Centre, described the training as crucial to development, as it serves as a bridge to build a new chapter in China-Africa Agricultural Cooperation.

“Though thousands of miles apart, China and The Gambia have always taken agricultural cooperation as a bond of friendship between the two countries. Since the resumption of diplomatic relations in 2016, remarkable achievements have been made in areas such as agricultural technology promotion and talent training.”
