Bensouda Deliberates IEC’s Position in UNITE Registration

By Kemo Kanyi

As the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) directed UNITE to correction on its forms for party registration, the leader of the yet to be registered party, Talib Ahmed Bensouda, explains impediments surrounding UNITE’s registration process.

Reacting to his party’s registration as UNITE hands over pickup vehicles to their regional offices on Monday, Bensouda firmly stated that the UNITE has filed enough forms at the Commission for registration, denying claims that UNITE does not file number of forms it claims to have filed with the IEC.

“The clarity that I want to put forward is that we have filed 30 thousand forms with the IEC. They said we did not file it appropriately as they want it. They claim that out of the 30 thousand forms that we filed, about 5 to 7 thousand were appropriately filed. So, every point in life is learning. What we did in response was to embody our UNITE behaviour by going back to the grounds and working on the problems highlighted,” he explains.

He highlighted that the issue affecting their forms were mainly on the administration demarcation of the Commission. Instead of using Mansakonko, Kanifing, or Banjul, most of the forms were written LRR, KMC, or BCC, citing examples of the corrections demanded.

The Mayor of the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) stressed that the members of the Movemnent reasserted their commitment, moving from one house to the other to make sure the party is registered in accordance with the laws of the country. He added that the process doesn’t require fight or criticism, but it only requires commitment to the cause.

He tasked the supporters of UNITE to work together to provide the needed forms demanded by the IEC and later get into the main work.
