The Banjul City Council (BCC), Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe and Deputy Mayor Abdou Aziz Dabakh Gaye have denied rumours that the council disbursed more than five million dalasis into the Banjul Youth-led Cleaning Project being implemented by REFELA.
Speaking to journalists at the council’s premises in Banjul this afternoon, Mayor Lowe said the claims were false, clarifying that the project is fully implemented by REFELA and that the council has so far disbursed only one million dalasis.
She explained that the one million dalasis released was part of an approved five million dalasi allocation and was meant to support the initial phase of the project.
According to the mayor, the funds already disbursed were used for recruiting workers and supervisors, engaging accountants, purchasing equipment and paying workers’ salaries.
“We have heard people saying that the Banjul City Council has disbursed five million dalasis for this project. This is not true. We only disbursed one million dalasis from the approved five million dalasis,” Mayor Lowe said.
She added that anyone who is opposed to the project or believes it is not following the necessary regulations should seek redress through the courts.
“No one can stop this project,” she said.
