BAS Farm: Leading the Way in Year-Round

BAS Farm, a thriving agricultural venture in Niumi Kerr Jatta, is making significant strides with its innovative approach to year-round farming in The Gambia. Owned by Baboucarr A. Sarr, the six-hectare farm is fully fenced and equipped with five boreholes, three of which are currently operational, ensuring a steady water supply.

Recently, BAS Farm successfully harvested onions, and preparations are underway for the upcoming groundnut harvest. Despite high demand, the farm remains committed to providing affordable produce, offering competitive prices and discounts for bulk purchases.

In addition to onions and groundnuts, the farm also cultivates watermelons, with harvests expected by July or early August. With a vision of continuous production, Sarr plans to implement sustainable practices that will enable the farm to operate year-round, a model he has studied in other countries.

BAS Farm also features a well-structured poultry facility measuring 30m x 9m, capable of housing up to 5,000 chickens. This expansion reflects the farm’s commitment to diversifying its agricultural output.

The farm’s success is attributed to its investment in human resources, employing local women for transplanting and other farm activities while providing them with wages and opportunities for empowerment. However, challenges remain, particularly in acquiring machinery, tanks, and solar equipment to enhance efficiency.

BAS Farm stands as a beacon of progress in Gambian agriculture, demonstrating how innovation, dedication, and investment in infrastructure can transform the farming landscape. With its commitment to year-round farming, the farm is setting a precedent for sustainable agricultural practices in the region.
