Telecom giant Africell has planted over 4,000 trees in Bansang and surrounding communities as part of a nationwide campaign to celebrate its 25th anniversary and promote environmental sustainability.

The initiative, carried out in partnership with climate advocacy group Green Up Gambia, spans 22 communities and culminated at Bansang Hospital, where Africell CEO Hussein Diab joined senior staff and hospital officials for the final phase of planting.

“We are planting 25,000 trees nationwide to commemorate our 25th Anniversary,” Mr. Diab told The Fatu Network. “No tree, no life; this is why we have chosen this approach to contribute to combating climate change.”

He praised the collaboration with Green Up Gambia, saying, “Africell has taken the initiative, and we encourage others to join in restoring our forests. These trees will benefit both humans and wildlife once they mature.”

Kemo Fatty, Executive Director of Green Up Gambia, echoed the importance of the campaign. “These trees are vital in our efforts to mitigate climate change,” he said. “Today, we are planting various trees including guava, mahogany, lime, oranges, moringa, and others. Both humans and animals rely on these plants for nourishment.”

Fatty also highlighted sustainability efforts: “We have an app that tracks all the trees we have planted to oversee their growth.”

Africell’s senior communications officer Musa Sise said the company is committed to long-term care of the trees. “We don’t just plant these trees; we aim to nurture them. That’s why we have entrusted them to the hospital,” he remarked.

Bansang Hospital representative Mr. Kanyi welcomed the initiative. “If you look around, we have numerous trees, and these will further enhance our environment. We are thankful to Africell for this initiative,” he said.

Experts have warned that deforestation and lack of tree cover increase vulnerability to windstorms, erosion, heatwaves, and reduced rainfall. Speakers at the event described the campaign as timely and essential.
