Officials of the Senegalo-Gambian Permanent Secretariat have issued the following statement:
PRESS RELEASE
The Senegalo-Gambian Permanent Secretariat is pleased to inform the Senegambian community that, in accordance with the high instructions of Their Excellencies the Heads of State of the Republic of Senegal and the Republic of The Gambia, who have given priority to dialogue, consultation, and the spirit of fraternity, a final agreement has been reached on the clear and mutually agreed delimitation of the border between the two countries.
The joint activities for the reaffirmation and densification of the southern border will resume effective 15 August 2026, covering the section from Touba Tranquil–Dar Salam to Saré Yoro Guèye–Jahanka.
The Senegalo-Gambian Permanent Secretariat extends its warmest congratulations to Honourable Alieu Njie, Chairman of the National Border Commission of the Republic of The Gambia, and Major General Cheikh M. L. B. Camara, Chairman of the National Border Management Commission of the Republic of Senegal, for their remarkable efforts, which made the successful conclusion of this agreement possible.
Foroyaa has taken note of the development but strongly feels that each country should establish a high-level ministerial committee to monitor each stage of the process towards the final determination of the border between the two countries. Needless to say, whatever agreement that is reached by the executives of the two countries must be concluded in line with the constitutional requirements of both countries. As far as The Gambia is concerned section 79(1) states:
The President shall be responsible for—
(c) the negotiation and, subject to ratification by the National Assembly, the conclusion of treaties and other international agreements.”
It is therefore important for the representatives of the two countries who are assigned duties of the border commission to know where their power starts and ends.
