Over 7,600 Migrants Died or Went Missing Globally in 2025

At least 7,667 migrants died or went missing worldwide in 2025, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), highlighting the continued dangers associated with irregular migration.

Although the figure represents a slight decline from 2024, the UN migration agency warned that the actual number is likely higher due to limited data, funding constraints, and restrictions affecting humanitarian organisations.

The agency noted that many of the deaths could be prevented through safer and legal migration pathways, stressing the need for improved protection measures for migrants.

According to the report, the Mediterranean migration routes remain the deadliest globally. In 2026 alone, at least 606 deaths were recorded within the first two months, despite a decrease in the number of arrivals.

The findings highlight ongoing global concerns over migrant safety and the risks associated with irregular migration routes.
