Police intercept would-be irregular Migrants in morning operation in NBR

The Anti-Crime Unit Sub-Base in Barra, North Bank Region, on Saturday, February 21, 2026, conducted a targeted morning operation as part of sustained intelligence-driven efforts to combat irregular migration and related unlawful activities.

The joint operation, carried out in collaboration with the Gambia Immigration Department and led by Sergeant Abdou Jallow alongside DSI Gibba, Officer Commanding Barra Immigration, was initiated following coordinated intelligence assessment regarding suspicious movements in the Niumi Lamin area.

Upon arrival at the identified location, several individuals fled the scene; however, thirty (30) persons were apprehended and conveyed to Essau Model Police Station for screening and verification.

Preliminary screening indicates that those intercepted include nationals from several West African countries, including The Gambia, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, Senegal, Mauritania, and Côte d’Ivoire.

All individuals underwent due verification procedures. Those confirmed as migrants were subsequently handed over to the Gambia Immigration Department in Barra for appropriate administrative action in accordance with immigration laws. Investigations remain ongoing to identify and apprehend any agents or facilitators suspected of organizing or enabling irregular migration activities.

The operation reflects the Gambia Police Force’s sustained strategy to disrupt irregular migration networks, strengthen border security, and safeguard vulnerable individuals from undertaking dangerous journeys.

The Force commends the continued cooperation of communities within the North Bank Region and remains resolute in protecting lives and property through coordinated, intelligence-led policing.
