SOS Children’s Village Moves To Promote Organic Fertilisers in The Gambia

By Fatou Krubally

SOS Children’s Village in The Gambia has launched an initiative to promote sustainable agriculture and strengthen family welfare through the Monetising Waste for the Promotion of Organic Fertilisers (MoWPOF) Project, funded by the European Union.

The project was presented on Tuesday during an orientation session at the SOS Children’s Villages National Office in Barkoteh. It aims to empower families, reduce child-family separation, and encourage environmentally friendly farming practices.

Speaking at the event, Fatou Le Jallow highlighted SOS Children’s Villages’ long-standing presence in The Gambia, now spanning over 43 years. “SOS Children’s Villages is more than a home for children without parental care. Our work extends to education, healthcare, and family strengthening projects that address the root causes of child-family separation,” she said.

The MoWPOF Project focuses on promoting organic fertilisers, providing women gardeners, male caregivers, and young people with skills in production, packaging, marketing, and sale of organic fertilisers. The organisation emphasises that this approach not only enhances agricultural sustainability but also protects health, as chemical fertilisers can negatively impact crops, the environment, and household wellbeing.

Alieu S. Bojang, MoWPOF Project Coordinator, said the project will engage social media influencers and local media to raise awareness about the benefits of organic fertilisers and advocate for government support of organic alternatives. “By educating communities and advocating for government action, we hope to create healthier crops, stronger families, and better futures for children,” he said.

The initiative underscores SOS Children’s Villages’ commitment to holistic care, which goes beyond providing shelter, education, and healthcare. The organisation works with communities to ensure children can grow up within their families, nurtured and supported.

The orientation session also served to build partnerships with key stakeholders and influencers to promote organic fertilisers and sustainable agricultural practices. Participants were encouraged to actively advocate for organic solutions to help shape a healthier, more resilient Gambia.

Through MoWPOF, SOS Children’s Villages demonstrates that supporting families and communities can go hand in hand with environmental stewardship, offering a development model that prioritises children, health, and sustainability.
