US President Donald Trump struck a surprisingly warm tone in his Oval Office meeting with New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani on Friday, praising the 34-year-old as “very rational” and predicting he could “do a very good job” despite months of bitter public clashes between the two.
The pair, who have traded insults ranging from Trump calling Mamdani an “anti-Semitic communist” to Mamdani labelling Trump a “despot”, appeared to set their differences aside as they discussed shared concerns about affordability, housing and crime. Trump told reporters “we agree on a lot more than I would have thought” and added “I want to be helping him, not hurting him”.
Mamdani reiterated his willingness to “speak to everyone” to advance an economic agenda for New Yorkers, while also standing by his criticism of US support for Israel’s war in Gaza. He said he had “spoken about the Israeli government committing genocide” and about Washington “funding it”, comments made as Trump sat beside him in silence.
