For the First Time in History, Seven African First Ladies Converge in The Gambia on One Vision — Advancing Health, Education, and Empowerment Across Africa
Her Excellency First Lady Fatoumata Barrow of the Republic of The Gambia and Founder of the Fatoumatta Bah-Barrow Foundation (FaBB), warmly received her counterparts — the First Lady of São Tomé & Príncipe, H.E. Maria de Fatima Afonso Vila Nova, and the First Lady of Liberia, H.E. Kartumu Yarta Boakai — as they arrived in Banjul ahead of the 12th Edition of the Merck Foundation 2025.
This historic occasion marks the first time in The Gambia’s history that seven African First Ladies convene in the country on a shared mission to advance healthcare access, women’s empowerment, and education through the Merck Foundation’s First Ladies Initiative.
Among those present to extend a warm welcome were Madam Betty Saine, CEO of the FaBB Foundation, members of the Office of the First Lady, as well as other high-level dignitaries and representatives of the Merck Foundation.
Tomorrow, additional First Ladies, are expected to arrive, as The Gambia continues to stand as a symbol of unity, leadership, and progress across the continent.
