A 17-year-old student, name (withheld) of Yunus School, appeared before Principal Magistrate Anna O. Mendy at Brikama Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
The case was heard in the Children’s Court due to the accused’s age.
She is facing a charge of “assault causing grievous bodily harm” contrary to Section 181 of the Criminal Offences Act 2025.
Deputy Superintendent Buteh Sawaneh, together with Superintendent Omar Jahateh and Corporal Angel Jatta, represented the prosecution, while Counsel Jobarteh appeared for the accused.
According to court documents, the young accused allegedly assaulted one Ebrima Jatta on December 10, 2025, at Yunus School in Busumbala Village, Kombo North, West Coast Region, cutting him on his left hand with a knife and causing grievous bodily harm.
The accused initially remained silent in court for over three minutes. She later responded, through her lawyer, denying all allegations.
The prosecution requested that the young accused remained in protective custody due to the seriousness of the offence, despite it being bailable. Counsel Jobarteh argued that the offence qualifies for bail under Section 3 of the Children Act.
Principal Magistrate Mendy said a decision on the bail application would be made at the next adjournment. The case has been adjourned to January 8, 2026.
Meanwhile, several students and teachers from various schools gathered outside the court, demanding justice for the teacher. Some students claimed that Mr. Jatta, the victim, had no ill intentions toward students and called for the accused to be punished, citing previous incidents that led to her transfer from another school.
