Women vendors lament Operation Clear the Road’s frustration.

Women vendors at the Brikama Market this morning told this medium that the Operation Clear the Roads team prevented them from selling near the highway.

A multitude of frustrated breadwinners urged the government to avoid clearing the market area.
” Market is not part of the highway, l don’t know why are they entering the Brikama Market,” Faye Ceesay said.
It could be recalled that Commissioner Lamin King Colley on Tuesday stormed Brikama resulting in the arrest of many roadside vendors.
” They have to understand that Brikama is very big and the demand for market space is high.”Tunko Suso said.
Most women vendors occupy the highway from the Catholic church to the Brikama Health Centre gate.
“I come to the market early in the morning to sell and get some money for my daily meal. I don’t stay more than 3hrs. I bring vegetables and sell them at wholesale price “Kaddy Njie laments.
From the Brikama Bus stop to the Gunjur junction is among the busiest areas. Vendors as well as taxi drivers often occupy the public space.
” We have no place to go. We need to survive. I government has to consider our plight and allow us to trade” Bana Sanyang asserted.
However, Operation Clear the Roads is not relenting in its crackdown on roadside vendors. Time will tell whether the appeals will be considered nor not.
