A key witness told the Brikama Magistrates’ Court on Monday that the late Omar Badjie was repeatedly slapped and beaten by a plainclothes police officer shortly before he collapsed, as the inquest into his death continued.
Majula Jammeh of Mandinary recounted the events of 26 September 2025 before Principal Magistrate Anna O. Mendy, saying she witnessed Badjie being chased, apprehended, and assaulted by officers.
Earlier in the hearing, Badjie’s uncle described him as healthy, hardworking, and free from any illness before his encounter with the police. The uncle said the deceased, a footballer and block maker, often assisted his father financially. The court admitted photographs submitted by the uncle as exhibits TB1 to TB9 before he was discharged.
Jammeh told the court she was preparing to attend a naming ceremony when she heard loud shouts outside her home. Stepping out, she saw a group of boys running and was informed that police had clashed with some youths in the area.
From her veranda, she saw Badjie scale a fence opposite her house, followed by three uniformed officers. Moments later, she heard screams. Moving towards the commotion, she saw officers dragging Badjie to the road in handcuffs.
According to Jammeh, Badjie told the officers he could not walk because his legs were weak. She said a plainclothes officer slapped him and ordered him to walk. “He slapped him again and cut a branch from a mango tree,” she said. “He used the branch to beat Badjie while insulting him.”
Jammeh said she returned home in tears but later saw the officers bring Badjie back, still handcuffed and struggling to stand. She said the same officer slapped him a fourth time, causing him to fall to the ground. She told neighbours she feared the repeated blows could damage his ears.
“I don’t know why they were slapping him,” Jammeh testified.
Magistrate Mendy adjourned the case to Wednesday, 3 December 2025, for the continuation of Jammeh’s testimony.
