When the Law Is Applied Selectively, It Ceases to Be Justice

The recent charges against Lawyer Borry Touray for a statement made at a political meeting raise serious concerns. We have seen senior government officials, including Minister Demba Sabally, and several NPP members make similar remarks without facing any consequences. That double standard is not only unfair, it is damaging to our democracy.

No country can build trust when one group is targeted while others are protected. The law must be applied equally, without fear or favour. Selective justice only deepens mistrust and widens the divisions within our society.

Freedom of speech is a cornerstone of any democratic nation, and it must be protected, not weaponised. Let us uphold fairness, consistency, and respect for every citizen’s rights, regardless of their political affiliation.

Gambia deserves better.

Justice must not only be done; it must be seen to be done.
