Wellingara Market Committee Chairman laments poor sanitation at the Marke
The chairman of the Wellingara Market Committee in the Old Yundum District Mr. Ebrima Makalo has said that the sanitary condition of the market premises is unpleasant while calling on the Brikama Area Council and the government at large to salvage them.
Makalo who spoke exclusively to the New Global Media highlighted that the rubbish is indiscriminately thrown around and left uncollected.
” The women vendors sit very close to the filthy water which is not hygienic. The cabbage too is not always collected on time”
Hundreds of vendors currently occupy the Wellingara Market including tailors and other textile shops and restaurants. All these businesses generate huge waste.
“A lot needs to be done here. Some shop owners default in respecting the demarcation and block the footpath”
Meanwhile, shop owners also told this medium that they pay tax accordingly therefore the Council and the government should consider them.
The chairman also took us on a conducted tour of the market premises where we showed the dilapidated toilet facilities which need urgent attention.
It could be recalled that the Wellingara Market Committee under the leadership of Ebrima Makalo this morning held a recitation of the Holy Quran to pray for development, peace, and unity at the market as well as the country at large.
