VDF Sponsor New Borehole Brings Hope to Foni Bujinga, Ending Decades of Water Scarcity

By Fatou Dahaba

The village of Bujinga in the West Coast Region celebrated a transformative milestone on Saturday, June 28, 2025, by inaugurating a new borehole project valued at D495,000. The vibrant ceremony, marked by joy and gratitude, showcased the community’s unity and the impactful intervention of the Vision Development Foundation (VDF), which funded the initiative to address the village’s long-standing struggle for access to potable drinking water.

The borehole, a direct response to a plea from Bujinga’s youth, is set to alleviate the burden of water scarcity in a rapidly growing community. Residents, particularly women and children, endured long treks to fetch clean water for years, consuming time and energy. The new facility promises to change lives by providing a reliable source of clean water, improving health, and reducing the daily hardships villagers face.

Fatou Joko Bojang, a women’s group “Kafo,” member expressed profound gratitude during the ceremony. “We have no doubt that the new borehole will tremendously change lives in the community,” she said, her voice filled with optimism. Bojang highlighted the increasing demand for water due to the village’s growth and praised the youth for their leadership in advocating for the project. She also commended VDF for their generosity, noting that the borehole would end years of drudgery for residents. In an appeal to the foundation, Bojang requested additional support for a milling machine to ease further the workload of the women in the community, who often process grains manually.

Representing the youth, Ousman Bojang shared the inspiration behind the project. “We know that the people in the community needed development,” he said. “So we decided to reach out to Vision Development Foundation to assist us with a borehole so that people in the village could access clean drinking water.” He emphasized the importance of having water sources closer to homes, a change that will improve living conditions and save families time and effort. Bojang also made a heartfelt request to VDF to sponsor a district-wide football tournament, underscoring the role of sports in fostering peace and unity among young people.

Modou Turo Darboe, CEO and founder of VDF recounted the journey that led to the realization of the borehole. “It all started when the youth reached out to my office for assistance,” he explained. Recognizing the dire need for clean water, VDF prioritized the project to address the decades-long struggle of Bujinga’s residents. Darboe urged the youth to remain united and avoid divisions based on tribal affiliations, emphasizing that the country belongs to all its people. In a generous gesture, he pledged to collaborate with the National Assembly Member for the Kansala constituency to organize the proposed football tournament. “If it’s finance alone, I will take care of that and sponsor the entire tournament,” Darboe promised, sparking cheers from the crowd.

Tunkara, a VDF board member, spoke passionately about maintaining the borehole to ensure its longevity. Describing the project as “life-changing,” he praised Darboe’s leadership and VDF’s commitment to community development. “Water is life,” Tunkara declared, urging residents to take ownership of the facility to sustain its benefits for future generations.

The inauguration ceremony was a colorful event attended by community members, local leaders, and VDF representatives to celebrate the milestone. Songs, speeches, and expressions of gratitude filled the air as villagers reflected on the significance of the new borehole. For many, it symbolized access to clean water, hope, progress, and the power of collective action.

The borehole project in Bujinga stands as a testament to the impact of community-driven initiatives supported by dedicated organizations like VDF. As the village looks to the future, the new water facility is expected to improve health outcomes, reduce the burden on women and children, and foster a stronger sense of community. With plans for additional projects, such as the milling machine and football tournament, Bujinga’s residents are optimistic about continued development and opportunities for growth.

As the sun set on the joyous ceremony, the people of Bujinga left with a renewed sense of possibility, knowing that their voices had been heard and their needs addressed. Now a beacon of hope, the borehole marks a new chapter for the village—one where clean water flows freely and the community’s dreams for a better future are within reach.
