Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar has seen a sharp escalation in unrest as master’s students continue protests over delayed scholarship payments, leading to repeated confrontations with police across the campus.
Earlier in the week at least six students were reported injured, including a student leader who suffered a broken arm, and by Tuesday the toll had risen to sixteen injured students, six of them seriously, along with four police officers who required medical treatment after the clashes.
The extensive use of tear gas has caused widespread discomfort within the tightly populated campus, with reports of breathing difficulties, lingering fumes and health impacts reaching even nearby medical facilities.
Religious leaders have called for an immediate end to the violence and offered to mediate between the authorities and students, while police leadership has instructed officers not to carry firearms on campus as efforts to stabilise the situation continue.
