Chairman of Brikama Area Council (BAC) Yankuba Darboe has expressed optimism that the leading opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) is capable of challenging President Barrow in the 2026 presidential election, saying they are more formidable and undivided.
“We used to have different camps and teams for business, but that doesn’t exist anymore. There’s only one camp now, and that is the United Democratic Party. So, we are much stronger to challenge the incumbent,” he asserted.
Chairman Darboe, who clinched the Council’s Chairmanship under the ticket of UDP, was responding in an exclusive interview with this medium over the weekend during the joyful welcoming of their party leader from abroad, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe.
He further emphasises that the swelling of their party membership is a testament to growing strength and cohesiveness in achieving their political ambition and victory.
Responding to the popular concern about Lawyer Darboe’s current old age and allowing young people to lead UDP, Charman Darboe vehemently disagreed because Gambia has been governed by young people since Independence, but has nothing much to showcase, from President Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara to President Yahya Jammeh and now President Adama Barrow.
“This country has been led by young people. We want a change now. President Jawara, Yahya Jammeh, and President Barrow were all young when they took office. So, we want to change Gambia in 2026. We believe good leadership can change everything,” he maintains.
The optimistic BAC’s Chairman reacts satirically to the political supremacy statement by President Barrow that the opposition parties are his apprentices, saying they are the masters, as exhibited by the cheering crowds during the welcome home celebrations for their party leader, Lawyer Darboe.
He, however, expressed dismay over the outcome of the 2021 presidential election and promised that history would not repeat itself in the 2026 presidential election, as UDP would be conscious and watchful.
