Two Gambian environmental officials have participated in the 2025 Ministerial Seminar on Comprehensive Sustainable Forest Management and the World Forestry Industry Conference held recently in Nanning, Guangxi Province, China.
The delegates — Mr. Ebrima Jawara, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources, and Mr. Sisawoh Sabally, Regional Forestry Officer for the West Coast Region — were among participants from several developing countries invited under the South-South Cooperation framework.
Organised by China’s National Academy of Forestry and Grassland Administration and funded by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, the seminar aimed to strengthen cooperation between China and developing nations in sustainable forest management.
According to the Gambian delegation led by PS Jawara, discussions focused on China’s achievements in sustainable forest management and how participating countries could adapt relevant lessons to their local contexts. The officials were also invited to attend the World Forestry Industry Conference, which coincided with the seminar.
The Gambian team highlighted the country’s ongoing efforts in sustainable forest governance, including the development of a national forest policy promoting community and private-sector participation, the formulation of a bushfire policy, and the creation of the Gambia Forestry Strategy and action plans. They also underscored recent reforms such as the transfer of forest ownership and user rights to local communities, the appointment of a military officer as Director of Forestry, and the deployment of security personnel to support forest monitoring and law enforcement.
Both officials expressed appreciation for the knowledge gained during the seminar and commended China’s advances in natural resources management. They said the experience would support The Gambia’s ongoing work to enhance sustainable forest management nationwide.
