Serving Overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church (CGCC), Pastor Tunde Bakare, has described the late former President Muhammadu Buhari as a man of integrity and far removed from the religious fundamentalist label often ascribed to him.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday night, Bakare, who served as Buhari’s running mate in the 2011 presidential election, shared personal experiences that shaped his reassessment of the former military ruler, who died in London on Sunday.
“I thought he was a religious fundamentalist until I came close,” Bakare revealed. “But after spending time with him, I realized he was far more tolerant and inclusive than many believed.”
Recounting a pivotal moment that challenged his assumptions, Bakare recalled an incident after the launch of their presidential campaign in Kaduna. “We returned to his residence and as he staggered out of the car, the first words out of his mouth were, ‘Jesus Christ of Nazareth,’” he said. “When I asked about it, he replied, ‘You do not have the monopoly of Jesus Christ. I’m thanking God.’”

Bakare further disclosed that many members of Buhari’s close protection team were Christians. “His driver of over ten years once asked me to pray with him. When I said I don’t pray Islamic prayers, he responded, ‘I’m a Christian, sir,’” he added.
According to Bakare, throughout their campaign, Buhari never interfered with his Christian faith, allowing him to attend church services even on crucial campaign days.
Describing Buhari as a reserved yet decisive leader, the cleric said the former president was quick to endorse sound ideas once convinced of their merit. “He was a man of few words but of immediate action when persuaded,” he noted.
Addressing perceptions of corruption, Bakare insisted that Buhari maintained personal integrity throughout his time in public service. “A lot of accusations were made, but none could be substantiated. I never saw corruption in him. He fought corruption to the best of his ability,” he stated. “His best may not have satisfied everyone, but he gave it his all.”
