Nigerian football has been thrown into mourning following reports that former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai has passed away.
According to Radio Nigeria, the 61-year-old died on Thursday morning after battling a prolonged illness.
Football lovers have since been pouring in tributes on X and other social media platforms.
While his family has not yet released an official statement, a senior Lagos State Government official has confirmed the development.

Fondly known by fans as “Dodo Mayana”, Rufai is celebrated as one of Nigeria’s finest goalkeepers in football history.
He was a key figure in the Super Eagles squad that lifted the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia and also featured in two FIFA World Cups—USA ’94 and France ’98.
During his international career, Rufai earned 65 caps for the Nigerian national team. On the club level, he had notable stints with Stationery Stores in Lagos, Go Ahead Eagles in the Netherlands, and Deportivo La Coruña in Spain.
