The Select Committee on Gender Children and Social Welfare concludes a two days intensive training on the Persons with Disability Act 2021.

The training, organized by UNICEF aims to equip lawmakers on the provisions of the Persons with Disability Act 2021 and oversight roles in the implementation of the Act to safeguard the rights of Persons with Disabilities in The Gambia.

Hon. Fatoumata Njai Chairperson of the Gender Committee, emphasized the importance of the session in ensuring that parliamentarians are fully informed and equipped to uphold the provisions of the Act.

The chairperson of the Gambia Federation for Persons with Disabilities Mr Muhammed Krubally commended the National Assembly for their commitment to strengthening disability rights in The Gambia. He stressed the importance of translating knowledge into action to ensure that people with disabilities are fully integrated into all aspects of society.

The Deputy Representative for UNICEF Gambia Mr Armand Gnahore emphasized on the commitment of UNICEF in safeguarding the rights of children with disabilities and inclusion in various sectors in the country.

The training focused on understanding the Act’s provisions, including accessibility in public spaces, education, healthcare, employment, and the provision of assistive technologies.
