The King’s Baton Relay, formerly known as the Queen’s Baton Relay, officially commenced in Banjul on Monday as the Commonwealth nations prepare for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
The relay is a symbolic and unifying event organized by Commonwealth Sport in the lead-up to the Games, designed to promote unity, celebrate diversity, and showcase the culture of member nations.
Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, Mr. Bakary K. Jammeh, chairman of the event in The Gambia, explained that the baton travels through all 74 Commonwealth nations and territories, symbolizing shared values, friendship, and connection. “Each stop on the relay highlights the unique culture, traditions, and heritage of the host nation or territory, promoting mutual understanding and respect among Commonwealth peoples,” he said.
He added that the baton contains a personal message from the Head of the Commonwealth, King Charles III, which is read aloud at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games. According to Mr. Jammeh, the message symbolizes goodwill, peace, and encouragement to all athletes and citizens of the Commonwealth.
The relay also includes community activities and school visits aimed at inspiring young people to embrace sportsmanship, teamwork, and healthy living. Mr. Jammeh described the event as reflecting the Commonwealth’s core values of human rights, sustainability, inclusivity, and equality, often incorporating environmental and social initiatives along the route.
“The King’s Baton Relay is more than a sporting event; it is a journey of connection, culture, and unity that brings the entire Commonwealth together in anticipation of the Games,” he said.
He further expressed pride in The Gambia’s participation, stating, “For us in The Gambia, we are once again honored and pleased to welcome the Baton into the Smiling Coast of Africa for a week-long celebration of spreading the Spirit of the Commonwealth and the Commonwealth Games.”
The week-long event promises a series of cultural and community activities, marking The Gambia as a proud host in the lead-up to the international sporting spectacle.
