Casamance rebels from the Movement of Democratic Forces (MFDC) have released a Senegalese army medical lieutenant who was captured during clashes last April in the Djignaki area of Bignona in the southern Ziguinchor Region, part of Casamance, the International Committee of the Red Cross confirmed on Wednesday.

The MFDC said the soldier was freed unconditionally and handed over to the Red Cross after talks with negotiators and the army chief of staff, thanking Serigne Mountakha Mbacke, the Khalife General of the Mouride Brotherhood, and former interior minister Aly Ngouille Ndiaye for their roles in the process.

The group called on President Bassirou Diomaye Faye to resume peace negotiations so that lasting peace can finally be achieved in Casamance.
