Momodou Sabally, Adviser to President Adama Barrow and Deputy National Campaign Manager of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), has criticised Kanifing Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda’s recent comments urging ethical and accountable politics, accusing the Unite Movement for Change leader of lacking moral credibility.
In a detailed statement titled “On Why Talib Bensouda is Not Qualified to Preach About Ethics,” Sabally described Bensouda as a “renegade” within the United Democratic Party (UDP) who continues to occupy a position in the party’s National Executive despite publicly announcing his withdrawal. He alleged that Bensouda’s Unite Movement, which grew out of an internal faction known as “Team Talib,” was originally formed to divide the UDP and advance his personal ambitions.
“Talib started a group within UDP over the past four years with a clear motive: to divide and later hijack the party for his personal political gain,” Sabally claimed, accusing the movement of fuelling internal feuds and undermining senior party figures. He said these tensions culminated in what he called “the most acrimonious party congress in UDP history” held in Janjangbureh in December 2022.
Sabally also questioned why Bensouda has not formally resigned from his post as National Organising Secretary, arguing that the Mayor continues to benefit from his dual affiliation with both the UDP and the Unite Movement. “Can Talib tell us whether it’s ethical to belong to two rival political groups at the same time?” he asked.
He further accused Bensouda of hypocrisy for urging his followers to avoid insults and divisive politics while allegedly financing attacks against rivals within his former party. “Knowing what we know, that Talib happens to be the only top political figure who pays his own party members to attack and insult his rivals, does this guy have the moral authority to advise his followers against insulting other people?” Sabally stated.
Concluding his remarks, Sabally likened Bensouda’s recent appeal for moral leadership to “a self-righteous mayor leading a rebel group within an established political party,” urging him to “do some soul-searching” before lecturing others on ethics.
