Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) carried out their first drone attack on Port Sudan-the country’s current capital and a key Red Sea hub-early this morning. The assault targeted the Osman Digna Air Base, a goods warehouse, and several civilian facilities in the vicinity of Port Sudan Airport, according to army spokesperson Brigadier Nabil Abdullah.
Abdullah confirmed the use of “suicide drones” in the attack, which caused limited damage and no reported casualties. Eyewitnesses described seeing smoke rising from the airport area following the strikes. In response, authorities suspended all flights at Port Sudan Airport indefinitely, and at least five domestic flights were cancelled.
This marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, as the eastern regions, including Port Sudan, had previously been spared such attacks. The city is home to Sudan’s main airport, army headquarters, and seaport, and is considered the government’s most secure stronghold amid the war.
