Mr Edwin Kwame, a visiting Ghanaian nutritionist, calls for the consumption of watermelon melon stressing on its nutritional benefits.
Mr Kwame was addressing a gathering of young people in Brikama on Monday while he was on unofficial visit to the Gambia.

“Enjoying a juicy slice of watermelon on a hot day is more than just refreshing; it’s also packed with essential nutrients! Here are some key points about what makes watermelon such a healthy treat:

At over 90% water, this fruit keeps you hydrated while providing minimal calories (about 46 calories per cup). Perfect for those warm summer ”

He added that these vitamins are vital for immune support, skin health, and eye protection, noting that just one cup of diced watermelon provides nearly 18% of your daily vitamin C needs.

“This powerful antioxidant gives watermelons their vibrant red colour and can help reduce inflammation in the body, potentially lowering cancer risk.

Important for heart health, potassium helps maintain proper muscle and nerve function. Watermelon contains around 273 mg of potassium per cup.”

He said it’s also essential for bone health. Magnesium also plays a role in muscle and nerve function.

Found in trace amounts, folate is crucial during pregnancy as it supports fetal development and prevents birth defects.

“So next time you reach for a snack, consider grabbing a slice of watermelon—it’s not only delicious but loaded with beneficial nutrients too!”he advised.

Mr Kwame was devastated by the wastage of watermelon packed by vendors on the roadside which could have been consumed by the people to enhance their nutritional intake.
