The Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) has renewed calls for affordable and reliable internet, accusing GSM operators of exploiting users with high tariffs and poor services.
In a statement, party leader Mamma Kandeh said it was “disheartening” that, despite the party’s earlier demand in June 2023, little has changed.
“Three years on, GSM operators continue to punish users with high tariffs and poor internet connectivity,” Mr Kandeh said.
He criticised the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA), saying the regulator was failing to protect consumers.
“PURA’s actions appear to safeguard GSM operators rather than users,” he added.
The GDC leader argued that internet access is now a necessity, not a luxury, yet Gambians are forced to pay some of the highest rates in the region while enduring slow speeds and unreliable connections.
“The internet is essential for daily life and businesses, and Gambians deserve better,” he said.
“We demand that PURA take immediate action to ensure services are fair, affordable, and reliable.”
The party urged authorities to prioritise the protection of internet users and build a more connected society.
