PURA briefed the media on achievements and challenges.

The Director General of the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority, Dr. Njoku Lamin Bah, expressed frustration at a press conference regarding radio and television stations’ failure to make timely payments despite a significant review of the charges. This statement was made by Dr. Bah, who was addressing the press for the first time since his appointment. He specifically mentioned the default in payments by community and commercial radio stations.

Dr. Bah emphasized plans to record all broadcasting stations (radio and TV) 24 hours a day, which could serve as evidence in the event of a dispute.

He also highlighted the Authority’s regular countrywide monitoring exercises to assess telecoms coverage signals, health, and safety issues related to masts and towers. Additionally, annual monitoring exercises are conducted to ensure that all broadcasters (radio and television) adhere to technical compliance. Capacity-building workshops on technical and legal issues are periodically organized to update and equip broadcasting staff regarding their roles and obligations as part of regulatory support.

Furthermore, Dr. Bah disclosed that the Authority has procured Electromagnetic Field (EMF) monitoring equipment to monitor radiation transmitted by telecom antennas, aiming to address public concerns about installed antennas in their vicinity.

One of PURA’s significant projects for the year 2023/2024 is to change the National Number from seven to 9 digits, scheduled for launch on or before December 31, 2024, in order to create an efficient numbering plan and align with global best practices.

Mr. Bah emphasized that this initiative will bring uniformity to numbers for all operators.
