Prosecution Witness Testifies in Gunjur Break-In Case

By: Isatou Sarr

A prosecution witness testified in the Brikama Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 20th October 2025, in the case against Bubacarr Jallow of Gunjur, who faces three charges: breaking into a building and committing a felony, stealing, and malicious injury to property.

Binta K.J. Barrow (PW1), Assistant Commissioner of the Gambia Immigration Department, appeared before Magistrate M. Dem to give her account of the incident.

In her testimony, PW1 said she was entrusted by her brother, who is abroad, to oversee the construction of his house in Kombo Gunjur. During the construction, she asked her stepson, Buba Darbe, to take photos of the site to monitor progress for payment purposes.

According to the witness, her stepson later called her at work to report that he had caught someone inside the house. She said the accused allegedly broke the ceiling, cut electrical wires, and shattered window glass while inside.

“After work, I went to the site and confirmed the damages reported by my stepson. I then went to Gunjur Police Station to file a statement,” she told the court.

During cross-examination, the accused asked if PW1 could confirm that he was found with any tools used to break into the house. She replied that she could not, as she was not present when the incident occurred. The accused maintained that he had only entered the compound to relieve himself and did not intend to commit any offense, but PW1 stood by her testimony.

Corporal E. Fofana, representing the Inspector General of Police, applied for PW1 to be discharged and for an adjournment to call the second prosecution witness.

The court granted the application, adjourning the case to 29th October 2025 at 11:30 a.m. for PW2 to testify.
