President says his government is committed to Democracy, Human Rights, and Media freedom.

Addressing media chiefs and senior journalists at the Presidential Media Dinner on Saturday, President Adama Barrow reaffirmed his commitment to democratic principles, human rights, and media freedom.

The government of the Gambia, under the leadership of President Adama Barrow, organised the first-ever Presidential Media Dinner at State House under the theme:Enhancing Government and Media Relations.

She noted that his government attained major achievements since assuming power in 2017, which includes an enabling working environment for journalists.

“As key partners in development and watchdog for the public, your work as media practitioners is indispensable in a democracy. In any democracy, media freedom, fighting corruption, and good governance are linked and are guided by respect for the rule of law. ”

President Barrow, however, stressed that media criticism should capture diverse and objective views. He added that it should aim at influencing the government and all stakeholders to improve performance on policy and programme implementation.

He further stressed that both government and media have a crucial role in building the nation and ensuring sustainable peace and prosperity.

Regarding the concerns of journalists, the President said the issues are noted while promising to make the Presidential Media Dinner an annual event.
