Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has expressed firm support for the newly adopted African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the coalition platform for opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections, stating that the alliance will prioritise the interests of Nigerians in all its decisions.
Obi, who made this known in a post on his official X handle on Thursday, said the coalition’s decision to unite under the ADC banner was made after “deep reflection” on the country’s current socio-political and economic challenges and the urgent need for a transformative leadership approach.
“Yesterday, the coalition members formally adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 Nigeria General Elections with Distinguished Senator David Mark serving as the National Chairman and H.E. Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola serving as the National Secretary,” Obi wrote.
He stressed that the coalition was borne out of a shared commitment to deliver “competent, capable, and compassionate leadership” that will place the welfare of Nigerians above all else.
“Our commitment is to sacrifice and work together towards the 2027 General Elections, ensuring that Nigeria gets a leadership that will prioritise the nation’s future by putting the welfare of Nigerians first,” he added.
The coalition, which includes prominent political leaders such as Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, formally announced the adoption of the ADC during a gathering held Wednesday at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja. The event marked a significant milestone in the opposition’s bid to unseat President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next electoral cycle.
As part of its leadership structure, former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola were appointed interim National Chairman and National Secretary of the ADC, respectively.
Obi also underscored the importance of collective action in achieving meaningful political change, noting that no single group or individual can single-handedly transform Nigeria.
“To dismantle the structures that keep our people in poverty and insecurity, we must build bridges, not walls, even when those bridges are uneasy,” he stated.
