The Directorate of Social Welfare of the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Welfare, in collaboration with the National Disability Advisory Council, successfully concluded a series of sensitization activities on Saturday, August 3, 2024. These events were aimed at raising awareness among Persons with Disabilities and various stakeholders about the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the Persons with Disabilities Act, 2021.

The sensitization activities, supported by UNICEF, took place across several regions: North Bank, Lower River, Central River, Upper River, West Coast Region, and Kanifing Municipal Council. Each event witnessed significant participation from stakeholders and individuals with disabilities, reflecting the community’s engagement and commitment to understanding and implementing these crucial legal frameworks.

The purpose of these sessions was to educate and inform participants about their rights under CEDAW and the Persons with Disabilities Act, ensuring that they are well-equipped to advocate for themselves and others. The active involvement and turnout at these events highlight the collective effort to foster an inclusive society that upholds the rights and dignity of all its members.

The collaboration between the Directorate of Social Welfare, the National Disability Advisory Council, and UNICEF underscores the importance of partnerships in promoting social welfare initiatives. The success of these sensitization activities marks a significant step forward in the ongoing efforts to eliminate discrimination and enhance the quality of life for persons with disabilities.

As these awareness programs continue to unfold, it is anticipated that they will contribute significantly to the empowerment of persons with disabilities, enabling them to navigate and assert their rights more effectively within the framework of CEDAW and the Persons with Disabilities Act, 2021.
