The Patriotic Alliance for System Transformation, Emancipation through Functionalism (PASTEF–The Gambia) has dismissed the notion of a “winnable candidate” in politics, describing it as misleading and contrary to democratic values.
The movement emphasizes that elections are determined by the collective will of the people, not by the perceived popularity or charisma of individuals.
According to the Public Relations and Communications Officer, Mr. Mayorro Sidibeh, history has repeatedly shown that even the most underestimated candidates can win when chosen by the electorate.
“The outcome of elections is not determined by personality, legacy, or loud declarations of competence, but by the collective decision of the voters,” Sidibeh said. “It is the people, not self-proclaimed individuals, who grant power through the ballot.”
He argued that politics should move away from personality cults and focus on systems and programs that strengthen governance.
“True transformation is not achieved through the rise of one figure but through the building of strong institutions, functional governance frameworks, and collaborative leadership,” he added.
Sidibeh further notes that the 21st century demands “systems, not saviors” and “program-driven leadership, not personality-centered campaigns.” He said sustainable progress depends on the quality of systems, institutional strength, and inclusive policies.
“The solution to national challenges lies not in individuals but in system-first approaches grounded in democracy, the rule of law, and good governance,” he stated.
PASTEF urged citizens and political actors to move beyond the belief that only certain individuals can “steer the national wheel,” stressing that leadership must be rooted in teamwork, systems, and shared vision.
“Ultimately, the future belongs to the people and the systems they build, not the personalities they temporarily elevate,” Sidibeh concluded.
