“Parliamentary ethics promotes civility and mutual respect among National Assembly Members……..’ Says IDEA country head

By: Modou Touray
Jainaba Fye, the country head of the International IDEA in The Gambia, emphasized that parliamentary ethics promote civility and mutual respect among National Assembly Members, regardless of their political affiliations. She pointed out that constructive dialogue and debate are essential for reaching a consensus and advancing the common good in a diverse society with varying perspectives and interests. She stated, “Ethical conduct in parliamentary proceedings fosters an environment where differing viewpoints can be heard and considered without resorting to personal attacks or divisive tactics. This will also set a moral example for future generations of leaders. “Fye added that if NAMS upholds ethical standards in their actions and decisions, they will inspire trust and confidence in the democratic processes, demonstrating that politics can be a noble calling driven by a commitment to public service and the greater good.” We look forward to the review and hopeful adoption of the Code of Conduct during this orientation and in a parliamentary session soon.
We also hope that honorable members will champion ethical standards in parliamentary businesses to foster a culture of respectful dialogue and the building of consensus in constitutional and legislative processes,” she said. These remarks were made during her statement at a three-day refresher orientation on ethics in constitutional and legislative processes for National Assembly Members of The Gambia at Sir DK Jawara International Conference Centre, Bijilo, this morning, with support from the European Union.
Fye also added that the refresher orientation is designed to enhance the capacity of National Assembly Members and provide them with guides and tools to serve as a reference point in their conduct relative to fulfilling their core mandate in constitutional and legislative processes. “Parliamentary ethics are the cornerstone of a functioning democracy. They define the standards of behavior expected from our elected representatives, ensuring accountability, integrity, and respect for democratic principles.”Jainaba Fye, the country head of the International IDEA in The Gambia, has said parliamentary ethics promotes civility and mutual respect among National Assembly Members regardless of political affiliations,
