Ebrima Tabora Manneh, leader of the opposition People’s Alliance Party (PAP), addressed supporters at a rally in Tujereng, stating that Gambian politicians are shielded from the country’s real hardships and urging the electorate to vote for competent leadership.
Addressing the crowd, Manneh said that while everyone is aware of the situation, only vulnerable citizens are living the daily struggles. He argued that politicians are pampered by supporters who themselves survive on low wages. “Politicians don’t know what people are going through more than them in this country,” he said.
He added: “I can tell most of our leaders, including the opposition, are only aware of the sufferings of the citizens, but they don’t live in it. Their children are not attending public schools, and they are not paying rent.”
Manneh urged voters not to waste their votes on incompetent candidates. “The President is receiving a huge salary every month, he’s not paying rent, no fees, his children are not in public schools, likewise the opposition and the ministers, they are all living a good life without helping to change the living conditions of the populace,” he stated.
He called for solutions to tackle poverty, insecurity, and what he described as a failing education system that produces graduates without jobs. “PAP is a party that focuses on solution-giving politics; we are not here for individual attacks,” he said. “I know it’s difficult to trust politicians, but give PAP the chance and see magical developments in our country. We want to unite people because that’s the only way we can achieve rapid progress.”
Manneh urged Gambians to rally behind his party, warning that the country is not heading in the right direction. He criticised government officials for sending their children to expensive private schools and hospitals while ordinary citizens struggle.
“There are government officials who are sending their kids to Early Child Development Camps, paying a little over $800 per term. These are kids who can’t even talk. Our government officials don’t care, including the President. All their children are in private schools, when they are sick, they go to private hospitals, and they travel abroad anytime they wish. So, it’s only the poor that are left struggling here,” he narrated.
The PAP leader’s remarks come as he seeks to position his party as a force for change ahead of the next election.
