By: Yunus S Saliu

In a significant political development, more than 40 members of the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) and one from the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) have crossed over to the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) in the Kantora District, Upper River Region (URR).

The public announcement of the defections took place on the evening of Saturday, 18th October 2025, shortly after the official foundation stone-laying ceremony for the Garawol Road Project presided over by President Adama Barrow in Garawol, URR.

The defectors included Lamin Bojang, former Treasurer of the GDC, along with over 40 UDP members, who were formally presented and introduced to the NPP leader, President Barrow. The President warmly welcomed them into the party, while many underneath commended their decision to join what they described as ‘a movement focused on unity and national development.’

The newly joined members’ decision was motivated by their confidence in the NPP government’s ongoing development projects and its commitment to improving living conditions across the country.

Their defection marks the latest wave of political realignments in the region and across the country, as the NPP continues to attract new supporters from opposition parties in recent weeks.
