Some 123 youth participants have completed a training program organised by the Gambia Startup Chamber of Commerce (GSCC) in collaboration with the ROOTS Project under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Security.

The two bodies jointly held a passing-out ceremony for the participants of the Round 2 Youth-Based Matching Grant (YBMG) Coaching and Mentoring Program held at Moses Lodge in Jarra Soma, Lower River Region.

The three-month program aimed at transforming Gambian entrepreneurs into more formalized and sustainable business operators.

During the passing-out ceremony, GSCC CEO Baboucarr Kebbeh revealed that 121 of the 123 participants completed the full coaching program, with 119 meeting the required Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to graduate. He highlights that the program has empowered beneficiaries, enabling most of them to formalize their businesses, and expressed appreciation to the ROOTS Project for entrusting GSCC with implementation.

ROOTS Project Director Mamour Alieu Jagne commended the participants for their dedication, noting that the project was currently evaluating the Youth-Based Matching Grant process to improve on efficiency for future beneficiaries. He emphasizes that the initiative supports young entrepreneurs who provide essential inputs, such as quality seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides, to rural farmers engaged in rice cultivation and horticulture, boosting productivity and income.

The Deputy Permanent Secretary for Projects and Programs, Hon. Fatou Jammeh-Touray, congratulated the beneficiaries and reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to supporting youth and women in agriculture. She urged participants to innovate, collaborate, and leverage mentorship, noting that if each graduate employs two others, the impact on youth unemployment would be significant.

Other speakers included Fatou B Njie who served as a coach for the participants.

The program continues to serve as a critical platform for youth empowerment, entrepreneurship development, and sustainable agribusiness growth in The Gambia.
