New Political Movement Launched

By: Kemo Kanyi

A new political movement, The National Alliance for Reconciliation and Development (NARD), has been launched by Yahya Tamba, the former chairman of the APRC faction loyal to Yahya Jammeh, Gambia’s former dictator.

During the launching event held on Sunday, the NARD Secretary General said the occasion symbolised the willingness of Gambians seeking truth, reconciliation, and a better future for a beloved nation. This, he says, amplifies that it is the moment that his movement declares publicly its intention to register with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

Mr Tamba cited that the NARD Movement was born from the pain of the people and the conviction that the Gambia must rise again, pointing out that for too long, the Gambia has suffered from corruption, insecurity, poverty, and tribal division. He alleged that the country’s civil service, once the pride of Africa, has fallen into inefficiency and ill-discipline.

“Crime often goes unpunished. While ordinary Gambians struggle for daily survival. But we refuse to accept this as our destiny. NARD stands for reconciliation because the nation must heal. We stand for accountability because corruption must end. We stand for development because Gambians deserve opportunities, dignity, and justice,” he emphasized.

According to Mr Tamba, the National Alliance for Reconciliation and Development is founded on the values of Africa, communalism, Gambian tradition, and a belief in inclusive progress.

The Secretary General mentioned that the movement’s aims and objectives are to promote national reconciliation and unity by honouring the traditional role of elders, religious leaders, tribal heads, and community structures as a pillar of peace, dialogue, and social cohesion.

“We aim to uphold the dignity, diversity, and harmony of the Gambian people, recognising the equal values of all tribes, languages, and religions as essential to our shared national identity,” he stressed.

Tamba adds that the movement also aims at strengthening the Gambian family and community system by preserving cultural values rooted in respect for elders, mutual responsibilities, and peaceful dispute resolution. He pointed out that it aimed to provide visionary leadership grounded in the principles of service, justice, transparency, and accountability.
