In a moment of celebration and recognition of impactful community leadership, Momodou Sawaneh, founder of GYO (Gambian Youth Organization), was presented with the prestigious Humanitarian Award at the 2025 SGWA Awards.

The award ceremony brought together changemakers, artists, and leaders from diverse backgrounds to honor individuals, making remarkable contributions to society. Among the notable attendees was renowned Gambian music star Jizzle, who witnessed the moving tribute to Sawaneh’s relentless dedication to community service.

As Sawaneh accepted the award, community members and supporters hailed his leadership as both timely and essential, especially at a time when underserved communities continue to grapple with deep economic and social inequalities.

In his acceptance speech, he expressed gratitude to the entire GYO team, both past and present, and dedicated the award to their collective efforts.

Over the years, GYO has built a legacy of hope and transformation, particularly in the South Bronx. The organization has become a vital lifeline for low-income families by offering essential services such as food security, housing assistance, youth empowerment, immigrant support, and justice advocacy.

Sawaneh also extended heartfelt thanks to Fatima Danso, founder of SGWA, and her team for organizing such an inspiring event. He highlighted the importance of supporting SGWA, praising it for creating a platform that celebrates those working tirelessly to uplift communities. “The SGWA Awards exemplify hope and creativity that can not go unnoticed,” he said. “They need people’s support to continue showcasing such impactful work.”

Sawaneh’s leadership and service extend far beyond the Gambian community. He has been instrumental in organizing the African Day Parade, participating in numerous local events, and serving on multiple committees within Community Board 7 in the Bronx.

This recognition stands as a powerful testament to the lasting impact of grassroots leadership and a poignant reminder that true humanitarianism begins with the courage to care and the will to act.
