Ebrima Sillah, the Minister of Works and National People’s Party (NPP) political strategist, has suggested that his ruling party needs improvement in mobilizing voters, especially among young Gambians.
Honourable Sillah made this statement during Coffee Time with Peter, aired over West Coast Radio on Tuesday. He says that NPP is doing well geographically across the regions, but adds that the party has to improve a lot on outreaches among the younger voters. He notes that when they are doing their data analysis, they don’t only do it for the NPP alone, but look at the entire political spectrum in the country.
He added that doing the variable test on social media, the opposition may have a stronger footing because that’s where their advocacies are mostly done.
“We pay attention to critical voices on social media. But we also look at the silent majority. We go for the data analysis on that to look at the variables in terms of all things being equal, to gauge where they will vote and have that data. We also consider our solid base,” he disclosed.
According to Minister Sillah, within their solid base, they look at the daily occurrences like people shifting allegiance and loyalty based on who they think will best serve their interests. He said there are dissenting voices that could lead to some of their own supporters coming out to criticise and lose confidence in them.
He says that if people are complaining about the high price of basic commodities, the government does not deny such claims from the public, but it works on its solution to regain people’s confidence.
“We find out what is causing this and what we need to do in terms of our policy interventions, macroeconomic strategies to ensure that we mitigate the burden on citizens,” he noted.
Minister Sillah maintains that one has to be very strategic but also very honest with oneself when you are dealing with these issues in relation to political campaigns.
