Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe Refutes Allegations of EU Funds Misuse

Banjul City Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe has vehemently denied allegations of financial mismanagement related to the EU-funded Banjul–Ostend City Partnership. Speaking at Banjul City Hall this morning, she dismissed claims that the funds were misused, insisting that all finances were managed directly by the European Union.

“I have not stolen any funds and was not involved in handling any finances; all funds were managed by the EU,” Mayor Lowe declared in a strongly worded statement before journalists.

The allegations were initially raised by Councillor Maxim Dock, who questioned the administration’s handling of the partnership funds, hinting that they may not have been utilized as intended. However, Mayor Lowe described these claims as baseless and politically motivated, suggesting that they were an attempt to undermine the progress of her administration.

She further criticized Dock’s perspective on development, stating that he seems to believe Banjul only deserves “old clothing, outdated bicycles, ambulances, and other materials,” rather than meaningful and transformative investments.

Mayor Lowe emphasized that her administration has always prioritized transparency and accountability, and she reassured the public that the EU funds were handled strictly according to the European Union’s guidelines.

Her response comes at a time of heightened scrutiny of the Banjul City Council’s operations, but she remains steadfast in her leadership, dismissing the allegations as an attempt to tarnish her reputation.

As the controversy unfolds, all eyes will be on the Banjul City Council to see how these claims impact ongoing and future development projects in the capital.
