The Mayor of Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC), Talib Ahmed Bensouda, has announced the formation of a new political movement, United for Change, which he says is dedicated to transforming the lives of Gambians.
The announcement marks his official departure from the United Democratic Party (UDP), a move he described as “one of the most difficult decisions of my life.”
In a video statement, Mayor Bensouda highlighted the country’s challenges, stressing that The Gambia remains among the poorest nations in the world despite its potential.
“This country is deprived of many things, most importantly the quality of life and welfare that citizens deserve,” he said.
He noted that Gambians continue to struggle with access to clean water, electricity, quality education, and healthcare. He particularly emphasized the plight of young people, who make up 70 percent of the population, many of whom he said have lost hope of building a future in their own country.
According to Bensouda, thousands of Gambian youths continue to risk their lives attempting irregular migration through the “backway.” He cited recent statistics showing that 12,000 youths make the dangerous journey to Europe annually, facing harsh conditions, detention in North Africa, and even death along the way.
He also pointed to the daily struggles of Gambian women in gardens and workplaces, arguing that such hardships can be overcome.
“The Gambia is one of the smallest countries in the world. There is no excuse for we cannot to prosper. This is a call for action for men and women, young and old, to come together and join the movement for change,” Bensouda urged.
The Mayor described United for Change as a platform formed by Gambians with the ambition to directly address the country’s pressing needs.
“I do not doubt that if we come together with our minds and resources, we can rescue this country,” he said.
However, he expressed gratitude to the UDP and its leader, Ousainou Darboe, for their role in shaping his political career.
“This decision has not come lightly. Everyone knows the support I received from the UDP, and I must thank them for their contribution to my political journey,” he concluded.
