Nigeria’s political and leadership community has been thrown into mourning following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in a London clinic after a brief illness.
Garba Shehu, the former Digital Media Aide to President Buhari, confirmed the news in a statement.
“The family of the former president has announced the passing of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin,” the message read.
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, expressed his condolences to the family of the late president and the entire nation.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Makinde described Buhari’s passing as unexpected but noted that the former president made his mark in service to Nigeria.
“The former president made his mark in serving the country,” Makinde said, offering prayers for divine comfort for the Buhari family and for Allah to grant the deceased Aljanah Firdaus.
Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, also expressed deep sorrow over the death of the former Nigerian leader.

In a statement posted on his official Facebook page, he praised Buhari’s commitment and steadfast leadership throughout his years of public service.
“President Buhari was a great leader who served Nigeria with commitment and a deep sense of duty. His contributions to national development and his steadfastness in leadership will be remembered,” Bala Mohammed stated.
He prayed, “May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.”
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s military head of state from 1983 to 1985 and later as a two-term elected president from 2015 to 2023, was 82. His passing marks the end of a significant chapter in Nigeria’s political history.
